The porn industry has come a long way…
One of its pivotal moments was the ‘70s release of Deep Throat, starring Linda Lovelace. The biopic takes you through her youthful start, volatile relationship with her (Catholic) mother, meeting her (sleazy) boyfriend and husband to be, and how he convinced her to enter the porn industry - inadvertently making a game-changing movie that put oral sex into a whole new perspective.
Surrounded by blood-sucking men using and abusing others for their own financial gain, Linda was also physically and mentally abused by her scumbag husband, and while the star, the hundreds of millions the movie Deep Throat made across the years, Linda hardly saw a penny of it.
The movie sports a fantastic cast, but the actress playing Linda’s mom seemed so familiar, but I couldn’t place her – only afterwards realizing I saw Sharon Stone’s name in the credits, but didn’t recognise her the way I would've expected! Wow!
There were rumours that Lindsey Lohan was up for the title role, but wasn’t reliable enough – with jokes going around that if you can’t be relied on to play a porn star…!
I read the Legs McNeil and Jennifer Osborne's book The Other Hollywood that explores the porn industry, where they highlighted the mob’s involvement in distributing Deep Throat (and pocketing almost all the cash) – something that doesn’t get much coverage in this movie.
With some very unsavoury and nasty life experiences depicted here, I don’t really want to say this is highly entertaining, but takes a visually well-made look at a real life character and her struggles. Makes a good Boogie Night companion piece.
